In the February issue of Aftermarket magazine, Ivor Searle's Commercial Director, David Eszenyi, gives his assessment of the remanufactured major units markets and the benefits of sourcing reman units over buying brand new OE, which is more expensive and less sustainable.

1. What have been the developments in the diesel market?

In terms of market trend, demand from workshops for Ivor Searle’s OEM quality remanufactured engines, gearboxes and turbos for diesel applications continues to be strong.  The LCV segment is particularly active with best-selling diesel major units including the 2.0 litre, four-cylinder TDCI engine for Ford Transit EcoBlue.  Various factors, such as the high proportion of diesel vans serving the home delivery market and delays in the new vehicle supply chain, are driving demand.  This had led to fleets and owner operators keeping their vehicles for longer, thereby increasing the probability of a unit failure.

2.     Why should workshops consider a remanufactured diesel major unit?

Our remanufactured diesel engines, gearboxes and turbos typically cost around 40% less than a brand new OEM unit, enabling workshops to offer customers a lower price for major unit replacement.  However, while remanufactured units cost less than brand new OEM, it is important to consider product quality, technical support and warranty cover when choosing a supplier.  All Ivor Searle engines and gearboxes are covered by a 12-month unlimited mileage parts and labour warranty, while turbos are provided with a two year unlimited parts and labour warranty.  Products are also supplied with pre-installation guidelines, as well as model-specific instructions if required.

3.     Any developments in DPF servicing?

Workshops faced with a blocked diesel particulate filter (DPF) essentially have three options: Purchasing a costly brand new OEM unit, buying a cheaper generic aftermarket replacement with the risk of potential fitment problems, or taking the most cost-effective route of getting the original DPF cleaned with the reassurance that the component can be easily reinstalled back onto the vehicle.

Ivor Searle offers a professional DPF cleaning service which uses water-based Flash Cleaning technology to remove all contamination, including PM10 particles, cerium oxide deposits and oil residues, from the unit.  Unlike chemical-based cleaning processes which only remove soot, Ivor Searle DPF cleaning eliminates both soot and ash deposits, returning the original DPF back to OE levels of performance at a fraction of the cost of buying a new unit.  We have also introduced an ‘off the shelf DPF programme for a number of high demand Ford Transit applications.  Available for free next day delivery if ordered before 3.30pm, the new exchange-based programme provides workshops with a professionally cleaned and ready to install replacement OEM DPF to minimise vehicle downtime.  All units include an inspection report, plus a 12-month no quibble unlimited mileage warranty.
